GlassBuild 2017 opens its doors Tuesday — But not without powering through the rain.

Hotels in downtown Atlanta are teeming with evacuees from Florida and elsewhere as Hurricane Irma drove people into Georgia throughout the weekend. Hotels welcomed evacuees, including their dogs and their cats, who mixed with conventioneers to share stories and wait for the rain to calm.

High winds and heavy rains appeared in Atlanta Monday afternoon, but not as high or as heavy as predicted. Local media says that the worst rainfall should end late Monday night. So far, winds are gusting from 40-50 mph and four inches of rain has fallen. Train and bus service has been shut down and all public schools and most government offices have shut their doors. Delta Air Lines canceled 800 flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; Southwest Airlines said it canceled all flight into and from Atlanta in the afternoon and evening.

GlassBuild will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday and will run through 2 p.m. Thursday as planned. According to the National Glass Association, GlassBuild’s co-organizer, the show will only close if Atlanta’s mayor and Georgia’s governor both declare a state of emergency and require mandatory evacuations for the Atlanta area. Wind gusts and rain are expected to subside by Tuesday morning. However, please know that shuttle buses will not run on Tuesday from the airport but will resume service Wednesday and Thursday.
