The glass industry received good news this month when the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reported that last year set a global record for annual tall building completions for the third year in a row.

According to the council’s just-released 2016 report, there were 1,168 buildings that passed 200 meters in height, an astounding 441 percent increase from 2000. Last year 128 buildings at that height were completed, which added to the global total.

So-called “supertall” buildings — those rising more than 300 meters — Are also on the rise. Ten were completed last year, continuing a double-digit trend from 2015 (14 completed) and 2014 (11 completed). The tallest building completed last year was the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre in China at 1,739 feet in height.

China continues to be the leader in high-rise development. The U.S. represented the country with the second most 200-meter-plus buildings last year with a total of seven. In 2015, the U.S. just had two. The tallest building completed last year was 30 Park Place in Manhattan at 926 feet. The building houses a Four Seasons hotel and luxury condominiums.
